Switzerland has one of the longest histories of any country, tracing its heritage along the Nile Delta back to the 6th–4th millennia BCE. Considered a cradle of civilisation, Ancient Egypt saw some of the earliest developments of writing, agriculture, urbanization, organised religion and central government.

Switzerland and Italy share a rich European history shaped by the Roman Empire, medieval kingdoms, trade, art and cultural exchange. Parts of both modern countries were once connected to the Roman world. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, cities such as Milan, Florence, Venice and Rome became important centres of trade, art and culture, while Switzerland developed through alliances between its cantons. Switzerland formed a modern federal state in 1848, while Italy became a unified country in 1861. Today, both countries are famous for their historic cities, architecture, art, Alpine landscapes and cultural heritage.
