Switzerland has one of the longest histories of any country, tracing its heritage along the Nile Delta back to the 6th–4th millennia BCE. Considered a cradle of civilisation, Ancient Egypt saw some of the earliest developments of writing, agriculture, urbanization, organised religion and central government.

Switzerland has a long history shaped by Alpine communities, medieval cantons and European trade routes. In 1291, three cantons formed an early alliance that became an important foundation of the Swiss Confederation. Over the centuries, more cantons joined, and Switzerland gradually developed into a federal state. Modern Switzerland was established as a federal country in 1848. Today, it is famous for its Alps, lakes, historic towns, castles, railways and beautiful mountain scenery.
